MESSAGE FROM DAN LEATHERWOOD
(Courtesy of http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/lisaleatherwood )
The other day I logged on here as I wanted to print some of the messages that had been posted and I was amazed and touched by the number of new postings and viewings. I wanted to put up this letter that I have just sent out via email also, in case you do not receive the email updates. Again thank you for walking with us as a family through this journey in our lives.
We, as a family, wanted to thank you for all your prayers and encouragement for us as we have been on this final leg of our journey with cancer. God has truly shown Himself faithful. When Lisa and I found out about the cancer, God took us to a passage in the Old Testament of the Bible and challenged us to look for and wait for His work in the details. The passage was Exodus 14, where the children of Israel were “trapped” between the Red Sea and the entire army of Egypt. God then opened the sea and the Jews crossed on DRY land, no puddles, no mud. Without this detail it still would have been an amazing miracle. Even if they had stepped in puddles along the way, no one would have thought of this miracle as an incomplete miracle or have thought any less of it. Yet, the reality is that they crossed on DRY land. God took us to that concept many times throughout our journey with cancer. The reality that I can share is that God DID(!!!) work in every detail on this journey. There are things that at the time, we didn´t see, but now, looking back, I can see the DRY LAND moments. He worked in and through every detail and continues to do so.
I have seen God provide for each and every need that has arisen. He has done an amazing work in each of the kids. Within 24 hours they had reached a point of talking about their memories with Lisa often with smiles. They immediately helped in many different ways, from cleaning to picking out clothes for Avery. (The chosing outfits is a special blessing as a color blind father is not the most gifted to pick out outfits for anyone, especially if that person is young and not yet fashion concious.) They were all ready to return to their activities a week later and have done very well since. I can see God carrying each of them in His tender hand.
God has also deepened some special friendships that we have here and has blessed us greatly through these families. We continue to receive amazing gifts and love from our town. Two to three times a week we are greeted at the door with lunch. Several times a week, two neighbors come in to help with the cleaning, laundry, or anything else that has been left undone. If we catch up on everything ourselves, we usually get scolded for doing too much and not leaving anything for them. While my parents were here, my Mom was frequently scolded by them for helping too much… All of that is to say that God continues to make sure that we are well cared for.
Many people have said that on January 18, 2011, Lisa lost the battle with cancer. In this time, God has reminded me that this is not the reality. Although we are now in a point of missing her as we go through this temporal separation, we also clearly see the victory. She has won the prize that she has yearned for since she was 4 years old, to be in the complete presence of her Saviour, Jesus, and be able to live as God originally desired for us: to live an abundant eternal life walking with Him without any obstacle to the communion and conversation with Him. We miss Lisa and feel the hole that has been left here, but at the same time we can feel the Lifter of our heads doing His work in us. He is our strength and continues to respond to our needs before we can even recognize them. He is good!
“So, now what are you going to do? Are you going to stay in Spain?”, many people have asked me. In answer to the second question, yes, we are going to stay in Spain. God brought Lisa and I to Spain to learn from Him and to serve Him here, and to learn from others and serve them here. Our commitment was to stay until He “kicks us out”. That commitment is still the same. God is doing a work here that I cannot express to you nor can I fully understand it all at this point. I am re-learning how to be still and wait on Him. Please pray with me as I seek God´s desire and plan for the ministry here as I assimilate my roles in our new reality. I do see that God is pushing some of our faithful church goers forward to get more involved. We now have a cleaning group that frequently kicks us out of the church to clean. There are other desires for ministry participation that are coming to the surface in others also. Some of the men have asked for a study to go deeper in the Bible and to prepare themselves for the possibility of teaching in part of the services at some point. I look forward to see how this stipling (the artform that is made up of dots) comes together. Thank you for your prayers and letters of encouragement.
We send out love from Spain,
Dan for the Leatherwood family
“The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him.” (Psalm 28.7)
Lisa had this verse marked in her Bible and next to it wrote He sees us through!
As a family we want to share that this is true. With our song and our lives, we want to thank Him.
ANELISE LEATHERWOOD REMEMBERS HER MOM
Posted 2/18/2011

Remembering Lisa
Tuesday an amazing mother with a great heart for God and an amazing testimony passed away. She taught us so many things and left an amazing impact not only on us but on so many others that knew her.
Even though it hurts to not have her here physically we can know that she´s in heaven with a perfect body, no longer in pain and an even more beautiful smile, which is hard to beat. We will miss her, but with the knowledge that we will see her again.
She finished her job, now it´s time for us to finish ours. We love and miss you!

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR LISA LEATHERWOOD
Posted 1/21/2011
A note from JD Bennett, Lisa Leatherwood's brother, about her home-going and the up-coming memorial service
Many of you have already begun mourning with my family and me. Right now, as I write this, Lisa's funeral is ending in Spain. Church leaders from around the country came to remember the pioneer church-planting work that Lisa gave her life for. Apart from the whole Navarran town of Artajona, co-workers and great men of God have converged on Lisa's small town this morning, and are recounting the great ways that God worked through Lisa's 37 years of life.
Lisa & Dan began work in Spain as full-time missionaries in 1999 at Pamplona Evangelical Christian Church. They founded Tafalla's Christian Family Center (a church) in 2005.
Lisa insisted on playing the piano at church, with hands withered and bleeding from the chemo-therapy, even until two weeks ago. I am so thankful to Jesus that He made a way for me to spend Christmas with Lisa and to help her lead the Sunday Music together one last time, just a couple weeks ago.
Lisa also worked with Dan and me in starting three annual camps, that God has blessed with success and professions of faith: Cowboy camp, Theater Camp, and Surf Camp. Every year Lisa was astounded at the response of Spanish children and young people responding to the Gospel for the first time. Lisa even willed her way into doing her part leading Cowboy Camp even this past summer.
Please pray for all the townspeople of Artajona & Tafalla, right now, to be listening and thinking about what God may be trying to tell them this morning. Lisa entered peacefully into the Lord's presence on Tuesday morning, just 20 hours after the last time that I spoke with her.
If you would like to join Lisa's Mother, family, and me in remembering her life, you are invited to:
The Lisa Leatherwood Memorial Service
Monday, January 24th at 4:00 pm.
Held at Shadow Mountain Community Church,

PASSING OF MISSIONARY LISA LEATHERWOOD
Posted 1/19/2011 and updated:
We here at ABF are very saddened at the passing of our missionary Lisa Leatherwood. The memorial service was held in Spain on Thursday, January 20, 2011 (Thursday morning at 8:30AM, California time). You can read all six of Dan's reports using the Internet news link below. Please pray for Dan and the family.
The ABF Precept Women's group led by MaryAnne Miller had special prayer for the family following the memorial service at 9:30, California time.
On Sunday, January 23rd, Jim Garcia gave a special presentation in both ABF Kids BLAST worship services to very carefully explain to them the passing of Lisa and how happy and pain-free she is in Heaven. Our ABF children loved Lisa so much. Following his presentation, teachers in each ABF Kids BLAST classroom talked about it and gave out a pictoral brochure with more information, including names and birthdays of the Leatherwood children. They will continue to pray for the Leatherwood family.
